Personalize Emails with Merge Tags

Use merge tags to insert each recipient's person details, like their first name or company, into your emails automatically.

Merge tags pull information from each person's record when the email is sent, so you can personalize emails to many people without editing each one.

Where you can use merge tags

You can add merge tags in:

    • Bulk emails
    • Email campaigns
    • Email templates

You can't type a merge tag directly into a one-off email, because the one-off email editor doesn't have a merge tag option. Instead, save your message as a template with merge tags, then insert that template into the one-off email. The merge tags fill in for that recipient. See Create and Use Email Templates.

Bulk emails and email campaigns are available on the Grow and Enterprise plans. See the pricing page for plan details.

    Add a merge tag

    1. Open a bulk email, email campaign step, or template in the editor.
    2. Place your cursor where you want the person's detail to appear.
    3. Open the editor's merge tag option.
    4. Select the merge tag you want, such as first name, last name, email address, or company name.

    Set a fallback value

If a person doesn't have a value for a merge tag, the fallback value appears instead. Add your default text after fallback= inside the merge tag.

For example, {{FirstName|fallback=there}} shows the person's first name, or "there" if the first name is empty. "Hi {{FirstName|fallback=there}}," becomes "Hi Alex," or "Hi there,".

    Add your signature

Use the Signature merge tag in bulk emails and email campaigns to add your email signature automatically. To create or update your signature, see Set Up Your Email Signature.
