The company owner is the one person responsible for a company overall — separate from whoever is working individual deals.
Before you start: Admins can always change the company owner. Other users can if an admin has granted them the Can change company owner permission. If the Owner field is greyed out for you, that's why.
Assign an owner
- Open the company profile.
- Find the Owner field in the company details.
- Select a user from the list.
To grant someone the permission, an admin goes to Settings > General > Users. See Understand User Roles and Permissions.
What ownership changes
- Owners see everything on that company — deals, people, documents, activities, and agenda items — even if their visibility settings would normally hide some of it.
- It applies to that company only. Ownership doesn't change the user's role or their access to anything else.
- Reporting stays accurate as ownership moves between people over the life of the relationship.
Auto-assign the owner on creation
Want the person who creates a company to become its owner automatically, without being able to change it afterwards?
An admin can set up a Conditional Field that makes the Owner field Required. The field appears greyed out, and the creator is assigned as owner automatically.
See Conditional Fields.
Assigning owners during an import
Who's importing
What happens
A user without the change-owner permission
Records import with no owner
A user with the permission
The Owner field can be mapped during the import's mapping step
A user with the permission can still only assign owners they can see. If their visibility is limited to their team, that's the list they'll get; with global visibility, they can assign anyone in the account.
